Value for beekeeping

Celery is a biennial; because it is harvested as a vegetable in its first year, it provides no forage for bees. Plants left for seed production branch out in their second year and form many small, whitish umbels. Nectar is secreted openly in these flowers; honey bees, flies and wild bees use it easily. Because the flowers pass first through a male and then a female stage, self-fertilisation within the same flower is limited and seed set depends largely on insects.

Flowering

In seed fields it lasts 4-6 weeks between June and July. The wild form occurs in salty, damp coastal areas.

Honey and pollen

There is no monofloral honey.

Note for the beekeeper

Placing colonies in seed production areas for pollination benefits both the grower and the beekeeper. Agree with the grower in advance that no spraying will be done during flowering.
