Value for beekeeping

Peach flowers open between apricot and cherry and offer bees a moderate amount of nectar and pollen. The flowers are pink and showy; bees visit the orchard regularly on mild, calm days. It does not create a big flow on its own but contributes to spring build-up.

Flowering

From March to April depending on altitude and variety, lasting about 1-2 weeks in an orchard. There are large orchards in provinces such as Bursa, Çanakkale, Mersin, İzmir and Denizli.

Honey and pollen

No peach honey is harvested; the nectar is used in the colony for build-up.

Note for the beekeeper

  • Most peach varieties are self-fertile, but bee visits improve fruit set and uniformity.
  • Fungicide and insecticide sprays are frequent in orchards in early spring; talk to the grower so that products dangerous to bees are not used during flowering and spraying is done in the evening.
