Old galvanized honey extractors often rust, contaminating the honey. When rusty metal comes into contact with honey, it oxidizes, leading to spoilage. This can be easily observed if a rusty extractor is left for a few days after extraction; droplets of honey on its walls, especially on the wire frames, turn into a toxic black liquid. This is far worse than a spoonful of tar in a barrel of honey. To address this issue, I remove the frames and rotor from the extractor and place the tank on a summer stove in the yard. I add clean, crushed beeswax to the tank and heat it until it begins to smoke. Gradually, I rotate the tank to ensure it heats thoroughly and is coated with a thin layer of wax.
