Burgos has seen a significant decline in its beekeeping population, losing 8,300 hives, which represents a 28% drop in just one year. As of 2025, the province has 21,306 hives, nearly 30% fewer than the 29,638 recorded in 2024, according to the Junta de Castilla y León.
Maintaining hives is challenging due to various environmental factors. Bees are affected by extreme temperatures, prompting beekeepers to use thermal protection panels. Excessive rainfall can hinder their foraging for nectar, and unpredictable weather can disorient them. Many beekeepers in Burgos also provide supplemental feeding for their bees. Additionally, threats such as the predatory Asian hornet and varroosis, a disease caused by a mite, pose significant risks to bee health.
