For many years, I used cotton pads to insulate hives during winter. Now, I have switched to a self-designed insulation system, which is a feeding box made of boards that fits snugly into the hive's cover. The walls are 1–1.5 cm thick and the height is 4–5 cm. Inside, I installed two partitions for the feeder, spaced 8–10 cm apart. The bottom is covered with a nylon mesh with 1x1 mm cells, secured with 1–1.5 cm nails. I filled the compartments on either side of the feeder with tightly packed softwood shavings. A thin cardboard sheet is attached on top, which can be lifted over the feeder. If needed, I can add candy to the feeder at the end of winter. For ventilation, I create holes in the walls of the feeding box and the hive cover, covered with metal mesh, which can be opened or closed as necessary.
