Nicaragua's honey production is projected to decline by 58.1% in 2026, reaching only 668.3 tons, according to the National Production, Consumption, and Trade Plan. This drop will impact around 1,000 families across six departments reliant on beekeeping. The decline will also affect exports, which are expected to total just 400.8 tons, generating USD 1.3 million, a 53.4% decrease in both volume and revenue compared to the previous year.
The primary cause of this decline is linked to disruptions in plant flowering cycles, attributed to El Niño and climate change. When flowering occurs out of season or is abruptly interrupted, bees must consume their reserves, leading to reduced honey availability for both local consumption and export.
