Researchers in the United States have developed an innovative tracking system to study the natural behaviors of honey bees. In a collaborative project between entomologists and electrical engineers, tiny tags smaller than a fingernail were safely attached to the backs of young bees. Cameras placed at hive entrances, along with Raspberry Pi-based computers, automatically recorded each bee's departures and arrivals. This study utilized the BeeCam-AprilTag method from Penn State University. Over the spring and summer, more than 32,000 young worker bees were tagged with approximately 600 new identification labels every two weeks across six different hive locations.
