Croatian researchers used trained honeybees to detect landmines effectively.

Researchers in Croatia have been exploring the use of honeybees' keen sense of smell to detect explosives, specifically traces of TNT. Previous studies involved conditioning bees to associate TNT's scent with food rewards. A new collaborative project with researchers from Bosnia and Herzegovina enhances this method by incorporating drones and artificial intelligence to monitor the bees during their search, aiming to address the issue of land mines remaining from the Balkan wars of the 1990s, with Bosnia and Herzegovina having around 80,000 mines and Croatia about 30,000.
