The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) continues to spread across Europe

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) continues to spread across Europe. Following initial sightings in 2024 and the first nest discovery in 2026 in Austria, vigilance is essential as this invasive species threatens honeybees, beekeeping, and the pollination of both cultivated and wild plants. Confirmed sightings have occurred in Salzburg, Vorarlberg, and Tyrol. Originally from Southeast Asia and introduced to France in 2004, the Asian hornet is officially recognized as an invasive species in the EU. After a single queen was neutralized in Salzburg in 2024, the first nests were found in Vorarlberg and Tyrol in summer 2026. Authorities promptly removed all nests, including one in Kössen at nearly 30 meters high. Although other federal states have not reported findings yet, vigilance remains crucial.
