Honeybee silk may enhance advanced wound dressing technology.

Researchers from CSIRO and Adelaide University have developed biodegradable films from engineered honeybee silk, which could lead to advanced ‘smart’ wound dressings. By bioengineering recombinant honeybee silk, they can alter the protein sequence to incorporate features like infection-sensing signals or targeted drug release. Their study, published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, demonstrated that the silk film is safe and well-tolerated during the healing process, gradually breaking down in the wound and potentially minimizing the need for dressing changes that could disrupt healing tissue.
