In Rijswijk, twelve nests of the Asian hornet have been discovered within two weeks, with three nests falling in Elsenburgerbos, Wilhelminapark, and at the Lommerrijck allotment association. Beekeeper Maarten Klein expresses concern over the high number of nests, stating, “I’m shocked that three have fallen in such a short time. It’s very dangerous.”
Klein explains that nests can fall due to their size, adverse weather, or the poor condition of trees. He warns that hornets can be aggressive immediately after a nest falls. “The biggest risk occurs right after a nest has fallen. They are very aggressive then. A day later, the risk decreases, but if a dog or child disturbs the nest, it could lead to trouble.”
