The Asian hornet is a wasp that is no more dangerous to humans than a common wasp, but it poses a serious threat to other insects, especially honey bees. Beekeepers are concerned about this invasive species. The Asian hornet appeared in France in 2004 and then spread across Europe. The Zaanlandse Bijtjes are an active group involved in detecting this hornet. On October 2, they spotted a nest in a playground in Kogerveld. Previously, nests were found in Poelenburg, Westerkoog, ’t Kalf, and the Hembrug site. They use bait traps, tag hornets with transmitters, and follow them to locate nests. Their Facebook page explains these methods. Earlier, beekeeper Erica Emsting provided more information about the Asian hornet on Radio 9 Oostzaan. This article is based on the Facebook page of Zaanlandse Bijtjes, compiled by Piet Bakker.
