Sergeant Brian Vonk and beekeeper Evert Brouwer discuss their bees aboard Zr.Ms. Evertsen. Lieutenants Maarten and Steven are embarking on a long voyage without their bee colonies, which remain in the care of the Den Helder Beekeepers Association and Steven's family. The honey bee in the Netherlands faces challenges from the invasive Asian hornet, varroa mite, and human factors like pesticides and paved gardens. Just before a photographer's visit, Steven's colony disappeared, as had happened earlier to Maarten. Steven will need to start over after the trip.
