The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) continues to spread across Europe

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) continues to spread across Europe. Originally from Southeast Asia, it was first detected in France in 2004 and has been present in Germany since 2014, especially in Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Karlsruhe. Eradication is now considered unrealistic.
Contact with the Asian hornet can be dangerous as it defends its nest and may sting. There have been three fatal sting cases in France. Hornets are generally no more dangerous than honey bees but will attack if their nest is threatened. Keeping distance from nests is advised.
