From October 8 to 12, 2026, Ayora in Valencia marks the 25th edition of El Primer Corte de la Miel, a festival celebrating beekeeping, gastronomy, crafts, and cultural heritage of the Ayora Valley. Originating from a community initiative between the local council and beekeepers to promote honey production, the event has grown significantly over the years. Mayor José Vicente Anaya recalls that the idea began before 2001, initiated by then-mayor Pascual Ortiz, with early involvement from local beekeepers. The festival gained momentum especially after 2012, when tourism councilor and beekeeper Mercedes Sáez enhanced its publicity and participation. Despite growth, the event has preserved its founding spirit, reaching its peak recently under tourism head Sandra Patiño. The mayor credits the success to dedicated and thoughtful management. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a reorganization, separating gastronomic and apicultural activities to improve visitor experience. The festival now attracts around 50,000 visitors over several days, a remarkable figure for a town of under 5,000 residents.
