In Göksun district of Kahramanmaraş, bears hungry in the Binboğa Mountains Kömür Plateau entered an apiary with about 250 hives and damaged 20 hives. The bears ate the comb frames in the hives and took some away, causing many bees to die.
Beekeeper İdris Küçük stated that his apiary is covered by agricultural insurance and he reported the damage to relevant authorities. He requested support from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.
Küçük said they struggle with snakes, scorpions, wolves, and bears in the mountains, and that bees contribute to pollination and tree proliferation in nature. He noted that apiaries can be protected by solar-powered electric fences and asked for government support.
