The State Nature Protection agency has detected a dangerous hornet near Levoča that poses a threat to local bees. They are currently monitoring the hornet's nest with plans to destroy it. Residents reported an unusual hornet in a village near Levoča, which was confirmed as the invasive Asian hornet, a species not commonly found in the region but highly dangerous to bee colonies.

This is the fifth known case of the Asian hornet in Slovakia since 2024. So far, four previous occurrences were successfully contained and nests eradicated. Authorities urge the public not to handle or attempt to eliminate the hornet themselves but to contact experts for safe removal to prevent further spread.
