Maltese Beekeepers Urge Action Against Asian Hornet Threat

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Maltese beekeepers are requesting government action to find and monitor Asian hornet colonies, whose growing presence threatens the island's bee populations. Industry experts call for a coordinated and ongoing response, warning that the infestation could impact Malta's food security and agriculture beyond beekeeping.
The seriousness is underlined by the destruction of 30 hives at a Birzebbuga apiary, causing losses estimated at about €30,000. Beekeepers emphasize that locating and tracking the colonies needs cooperation among Civil Protection, armed forces, and industry representatives. They suggest following Italy's example, where Civil Protection is equipped to intervene in such cases.
