A Greek honey with a unique botanical origin won first place in a blind tasting conducted by Gastronomos, receiving the 2026 Honey Production Award. The announcement was made on October 12 and concerns a family-run beekeeping product linked to a specific geographic area and seasonal flowering. The honey is also undergoing recognition as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The honey, called "Anammátomelo Ikarias 'Amalia'", is produced by beekeeper Vaggelis Christodoulou. It mainly comes from the nectar of the autumn heather plant, known locally in Ikaria as "ánamma". This flowering is an important food source for bees in autumn. The honey is characterized by a dense texture, limited transparency, natural crystallization, mild sweetness, and bitter and spicy flavor notes.
