Geographical Indication Honey Harvesting Has Started in Ardahan: 450 Tons of Honey Production Expected

Ilhan Evliyaoğlu, President of the Ardahan Beekeepers Association, stated, "The harvest period in Ardahan will last until August 10. We expect about 80% honey yield."

President Evliyaoğlu mentioned that 620 beekeepers registered with the Beekeepers Association in Ardahan have started honey harvesting from 35,000 hives and that approximately 450 tons of honey production is expected.

Evliyaoğlu noted that due to the effective rainfall during the honey season, honey yield has decreased by 20%, but despite the rains, a significant increase in honey production compared to the previous year is still anticipated.

Evliyaoğlu stated, "Our 2024 harvest period has begun. We are currently extracting the honeycombs that we placed about a month and a half ago. Right now, two-thirds of the frames are capped. However, the honey is maturing, and these types of frames are seen as the beginning of my harvest period. The rainy weather during the honey season is causing a 20% decrease in honey yield. This is due to the effective rainfall during the period when honey flow is expected. The year 2023 was very weak. But 2024 is currently going well. We aim to achieve yields of up to 80%. The flora is still rich, and honey flow continues. Rainy weather and climatic conditions are increasingly negatively affecting beekeepers. And every year, they find themselves longing for the next year. Natural conditions and global warming are among the factors affecting yield," he said.

The Price of Geographical Indication Ardahan Honey Has Increased

Ardahan honey, obtained from the pollen of flowers grown in high-altitude mountains with unique floras of Caucasian bees, reveals a unique healing property after being filtered. President of the Beekeepers Association Ilhan Evliyaoğlu stated that the price per kilogram of this healing honey has been set at 1000 TL this year. President Evliyaoğlu mentioned that they have identified three sales points in Ardahan where the honey produced by the producers will be offered to consumers at these locations.
