Agriculture: Bees Will Be Bred

A team of scientists formed under the coordination of the Turkish Beekeepers' Central Union will work on the breeding of 5 bee breeds in Turkey. Ziya Şahin, the President of the Turkish Beekeepers' Central Union, stated that the world's highest quality honey is produced in Turkey, saying, "We are working to ensure that Turkish beekeepers produce more than beekeepers abroad. It is a handicap for us that our beekeepers bring in queen bees and breeding stock from abroad." Şahin mentioned that Turkey is the second largest honey producer in the world, with an annual production of 106 thousand tons. He explained that they are continuing efforts to identify honey produced in Turkey, noting that in this context, the identities of chestnut, thyme, sunflower, cotton, and citrus honey have been established.
