Thieves strike in Weert

In Limburg's Weert, thousands of bees were stolen this week. Fifteen of beekeeper Harrie Feijen's sixteen hives have disappeared. The 86-year-old beekeeper has kept bees behind an orchard in Weert for over 25 years and discovered the theft yesterday morning. He suspects that the bees were stolen during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, after unknown individuals cut through a wire.

Response from the beekeeper

"They really put in a lot of effort," he tells 1Limburg. "My hives were behind an orchard. That's a few hundred meters walk from the road. So the thieves really had to drag them." Feijen has no idea who did it. "I wonder why anyone would go to such lengths," he says.
