For 46 years, Mr. Rogelio López has been tending to his nearly 20,000 hives in Hermosillo to oversee an ancient ritual: the pollination of fruits and vegetables. A gentleman from northern Mexico, wearing boots, a braided belt, a blue dress shirt, and a hat, embodied the courteous image of Mr. Rogelio López. It was just before five in the afternoon in a desert area near the airport of the capital of Sonora. The golden hour descended upon one of the beekeeper's lands, revealing before my eyes a fascinating kingdom: the bees.
