How is each day rated?

  • Formic acid: suitable when the day's high is 15–25 °C; borderline at 12–15 °C or 25–28 °C; not suitable below 12 °C or above 28 °C. Days with more than 10 mm of rain drop one level.
  • Thymol: suitable when the high is 15–25 °C; borderline at 12–15 °C or 25–30 °C; it barely works when colder and disturbs the bees when hotter.
  • Oxalic acid dribbling: only in the broodless period (usually early winter). Suitable when the high is 3–12 °C, borderline at 0–3 °C or 12–15 °C.
Important: This is a weather guide, not a substitute for the product instructions. Always follow the label and the uses permitted in your country, and never treat with honey supers on.

Frequently asked questions

At what temperature is formic acid applied?

Formic acid works best when daytime temperatures are about 15–25 °C. When colder it does not evaporate enough; above 28–30 °C it evaporates too fast and can harm bees and the queen.

When is oxalic acid applied?

Oxalic acid does not reach mites under capped brood, so it is used in the broodless period – in most regions early winter – when the bees are in a loose cluster and it is not too cold.

Can I search by postcode?

Yes. Type a town, district or postcode, or use your browser's location. The forecast is fetched fresh every time.

Which day should I choose?

Pick a period marked "Suitable" for your treatment where the temperature stays in range for several days after; for longer treatments such as formic acid it matters that conditions stay right for days.
