A routine gardening task in Veenendaal went wrong on Saturday when a resident unknowingly disturbed a nest of Asian hornets while trimming his hedge. He was stung twice and experienced pain and swelling in his hand for at least twelve hours. On Monday, Erik Strato from VespaX removed the nest, accompanied by beekeeper Henk Noppe, who explained why this hornet species poses a threat and what people should watch out for.

The nest was located low in a hedge, showing that hornets do not always nest high in trees. Noppe advises observing calmly before pruning to see if hornets repeatedly fly in and out of the same spot, which may indicate a nest.
