Adana Beekeeping Days is the general name given to the fairs, honey competitions and promotional events that bring together beekeepers, honey producers and consumers in Adana, one of Türkiye's leading honey-producing provinces. We have not been able to verify a single event held regularly every year under this name; beekeeping gatherings in Adana mostly take the form of honey competitions and beekeeping fairs.

Is there actually an event called Adana Beekeeping Days?

Although the name "Adana Beekeeping Days" appears in older sources, we have not been able to confirm from an official source the founding year, organiser or most recent date of a regular event under this name. The Adana events that can be verified are:

  • Adana Honey Competition: Organised by the Adana Provincial Beekeepers' Association together with the provincial directorate of agriculture and the fair company. The 7th competition, held on 11 November 2017 at the TÜYAP Adana fairground, drew 115 honey producers; it was held alongside an international agricultural fair taking place on the same days.
  • Honey and beekeeping products fair: The fair held at the Sarıçam Cultural Centre in December 2021 attracted 29 companies from 10 provinces. At the same event, 49 producers entered the "Best Honey" competition run by the provincial directorate of agriculture and the beekeepers' association; the samples underwent laboratory analysis.
Because events in Adana have been held under different names and in different years, confirm the current date and venue with the Adana Provincial Beekeepers' Association or the provincial directorate of agriculture and forestry.

Why is beekeeping in Adana important?

According to TurkStat (Turkish Statistical Institute) data, Adana is among the top provinces in honey production in Türkiye and among those with the highest number of hives. The main reasons are:

  • Citrus honey: The orange, lemon and mandarin groves of the Çukurova plain flower in April; one of the first honey harvests of the season in Türkiye comes from these groves.
  • Cotton honey: Cotton fields flowering on the plain in summer are an important source of honey.
  • Taurus highlands: Highland honey is produced throughout the summer in mountainous districts such as Pozantı and on the Taurus plateaus.
  • Wintering ground: Because of its mild winters, migratory beekeepers from eastern and central Anatolia bring their hives to Çukurova in winter and early spring.

What happens at honey competitions in Adana?

  1. Entry: Producers submit their honey samples by the set deadline.
  2. Pre-screening and analysis: Samples are examined in the laboratory for moisture, sugar profile and adulteration.
  3. Jury assessment: Honeys that pass the analysis are scored on colour, aroma, taste and appearance.
  4. Awards: Placed entries receive prizes and beekeeping equipment.

Benefits of events in Adana for migratory beekeepers

Winter and spring events in Adana are also valuable for migratory beekeepers wintering in the region:

  • Pre-season supplies: Shortages of boxes, frames and foundation can be made up before the citrus flow.
  • Varroa plan: During the wintering period, information can be obtained on treatments that take advantage of the broodless or low-brood period.
  • Site and permit information: Apiary sites, apiary registration and transport documents can be discussed with the association.
