Izmit Honey Days is a honey market lasting a few days, organised jointly by Izmit Municipality and the Kocaeli Provincial Beekeepers' Association in the Izmit district of Kocaeli, where beekeepers sell their honey and bee products directly to the public. The event is set up in Izmit Municipality Square and in recent years has been repeated in different seasons.

What is Izmit Honey Days?

This event is not a scientific congress or an equipment fair but a producer-to-consumer honey sales event. The aim announced by the organisers is to support honey producers from Izmit and Kocaeli and to bring natural, additive-free products to the public without intermediaries. At the stands, beekeepers present different kinds of honey and other bee products, offer tastings and make sales.

When and where is Izmit Honey Days held?

  • Venue: Izmit Municipality Square (city centre).
  • Duration: Usually 3–4 days.
  • Frequency: According to news reports, the event was held on 25–28 January 2024 and 7–9 May 2026; local press shows it has also been repeated in other months.
  • Organisers: Izmit Municipality and the Kocaeli Provincial Beekeepers' Association.
Izmit Honey Days has no fixed annual calendar; the dates are announced separately each time by the municipality and the association. Before going, check Izmit Municipality's current announcement.

What honeys are produced in Kocaeli?

Although Kocaeli is known for its industry, the Samanlı Mountains and the slopes of Kartepe in the south of the province, and the Kandıra countryside in the north, have rich vegetation. The main honey sources in the region are:

  • Chestnut: Chestnut trees at the forest edges flower in early summer; chestnut honey is dark with a slightly bitter taste.
  • Lime (linden) and black locust: Light-coloured, fragrant honeys of early summer.
  • Flower honey: Honeys from mixed wildflowers in the countryside, whose colour and taste vary with the area and the year.

What should visitors look out for when buying honey?

  1. Get to know the producer: Where is the beekeeper's apiary, and in which period was the honey harvested? A clear answer inspires confidence.
  2. Check the label: The producer's name, business details, production date and best-before date should be on the label.
  3. Ask for an analysis report: Telling fake honey apart by taste is not reliable; laboratory analysis is the most solid indicator.
  4. Don't be put off by crystallisation: Set honey has not gone off and does not contain added sugar; many flower honeys crystallise over time.
  5. Storage: Store honey in a closed jar in a cool place out of the sun; the fridge can speed up crystallisation.

Tips for beekeepers who want a stand

  • Application: Contact the Kocaeli Provincial Beekeepers' Association about participation conditions and stand allocation.
  • Hygiene: Have disposable spoons, covered containers and hand-cleaning supplies for tastings.
  • Information cards: Small cards giving the type of honey, its area and harvest month make selling easier.
  • Comb honey: Capped comb honey attracts attention visually; present it in leak-proof boxes.
