Royal jelly is the most sensitive bee product there is. With this product the packaging is not incidental but decisive.

What it is sensitive to

• Heat: The cold chain begins at the moment of collection
• Light: Breaks down constituents
• Air: Oxidation at every exposure

The requirements

• Dark glass with a well-sealing lid
• Small capacity — not a detail but the core
• Food-safe and completely dry
• No prolonged metal contact; glass or food-grade plastic is preferred

Why small matters so much

Every opening exposes the entire contents to air.

A large jar opened twenty times loses more quality than the storage time itself costs. Filling into the unit it will be sold in is therefore not a luxury.

The cold chain

From the moment of collection to the customer. If it breaks, the product looks the same but loses value.

The buyer cannot detect it — which makes it a matter of honesty, not only of technique.

Freezing

For longer storage, freezing is common. Then additionally: airtight against freezer burn, and thawing and refreezing is inadvisable.

Labelling

Harvest date, apiary and storage instructions. With this product the instructions should also be given to the buyer in writing.

Hygiene

• Clean jars before use and dry completely
• Leave no detergent residue
• Do not fill in a room with strong smells

The warning

Royal jelly carries the clearest allergy risk of all bee products. That should be stated at the point of sale.
