Non-chemical methods exploit the biology of the mite. They do not always replace treatment, but they reduce how much is needed — and that slows resistance.

The biological basis

The mite reproduces only in sealed brood. Every method below follows from that single fact.

Brood interruption

The queen is temporarily prevented from laying, or the colony is split. A period without sealed brood results.

• The mite cannot reproduce
• All mites come onto the bees — a contact treatment then reaches nearly all of them

This is the most powerful non-chemical intervention there is, and it also strengthens any treatment that follows.

Cutting drone brood

Drone brood stays capped longest and is preferred by the mite. Letting a drone frame be drawn and cutting out the sealed brood removes part of the mite population.

• Cut before emergence; too late and you are rearing mites
• Note the date; this is a task where forgetting is costly
• Do not use in colonies from which you want to rear drones

Trapping comb

The queen is confined to a single frame. The mites move to that brood; the frame is destroyed before it emerges.

Labour-intensive and error-prone, but highly targeted.

Open mesh floor

Fallen mites cannot return. The contribution is modest but costs nothing, and the tray also enables monitoring.

Breeding

Selecting for hygienic and grooming behaviour permanently lowers the need to intervene. It is the slowest measure and the only one that compounds.

What these methods are not

They are not an argument for not treating at all. Leaving Varroa uncontrolled is not naturalness but neglect, and the colony dies of it.

The proper role: they lower the pressure, delay the point at which a product is needed, and make that product more effective.

Measuring remains

Even in a chemical-free programme you measure. Without measurement there is no way to know whether the approach is working.
