Traditional hives are those with fixed comb: the bees attach their combs to the lid or wall, and the combs cannot be removed.

Forms

Hollowed logs, woven skeps, hives of clay or mud, tubes of reed. What they share is that the material is local and the construction simple.

The advantages

• Cost: Essentially nil; the material is at hand
• Insulation: Thick walls of wood or clay insulate excellently
• Durability: No purchased components needed
• Suited to local conditions

The decisive limitation

The combs cannot be removed. Everything follows from that:

• The colony cannot be inspected. Disease goes unseen
• Brood diseases cannot be assessed — the reason these hives are a problem for disease control in many countries
• Harvesting destroys the comb and often part of the brood
• Varroa cannot be monitored as in a framed hive
• No targeted breeding is possible

What the modern hive changed

The movable frame is the invention on which all modern beekeeping rests. Without it there is no inspection, no selective harvest and no disease control.

That is not a matter of taste but of what is possible.

Where they are still used

In regions where equipment is expensive or unavailable, and where beekeeping is small-scale and for own use. Also maintained for cultural reasons.

The honey

What comes out is comb honey or pressed honey. Pressed honey contains more pollen and wax particles and is cloudier.

Regulation

In some countries their use is restricted or conditional, precisely because disease inspection is not possible. Check local rules.
