Alongside the standard systems, many regions have their own hive designs, and beekeepers frequently build their own.

Why local designs exist

• Climate: Thicker walls where winters are severe, more ventilation where summers are hot
• Available material: What the local timber trade supplies
• Local subspecies: Bees that build smaller colonies need less volume
• Working method: Migratory beekeeping favours designs that secure and stack well
• Cost: Building your own is considerably cheaper

What any design must respect

One measurement governs everything: bee space. Bees leave any gap of roughly six to nine millimetres open.

• Too narrow and the gap is filled with propolis; frames stick fast
• Too wide and the bees build comb across it; frames cannot be lifted

A home-built hive that gets this wrong is not a hive but a fixed-comb box.

Practical requirements

• Frames must lift out freely
• Boxes must sit flush; gaps let in draughts and robbers
• The roof must shed water and overhang
• The design must allow ventilation
• Timber should be untreated on the inside

The compatibility problem

This is the main argument against a custom design. A non-standard frame size means:

• You cannot borrow frames or lend them
• You cannot buy a colony on your own frames
• Nucs and colonies are hard to sell
• Foundation must be cut to size
• Help in an emergency is harder to arrange

The practical rule

The best system is the one that is common in your area. Not because it is technically superior, but because it connects you to everyone around you.

A beekeeper who has to cut every sheet of foundation and cannot borrow a frame pays for the saving many times over.

Where custom builds make sense

Building your own boxes to a standard internal dimension gives the cost saving without the isolation. That is the sensible compromise.
