Dadant Hive

The Dadant hive is a vertical, movable-frame hive system consisting of a single deep brood box with shallower honey supers added on top. It offers the queen a large, undivided brood nest; the brood nest is inspected in one box, without lifting boxes. It is widespread in many European countries such as France, Italy and Switzerland; in Türkiye it is used only to a limited extent compared with the Langstroth.

What is a Dadant hive and where does it come from?

The system is based on work on large-frame hives carried out in the second half of the 19th century by Charles Dadant, a French-born beekeeper who kept bees in the USA. In Europe it spread as the Dadant-Blatt through an adaptation by the Swiss beekeeper Johann Blatt, and over time variants with small regional differences in dimensions appeared.

The basic idea is simple: the queen should not meet a box boundary while laying, the brood nest should be single and continuous, and the honey to be harvested should be collected in shallow supers of a manageable weight.

Dadant hive design and dimensions

• Floor: Solid or mesh; most models have an entrance reducer.
• Deep brood box: A single box. There are 10-, 11- and 12-frame versions.
• Queen excluder: Mostly used; the deep brood box already gives the queen enough space.
• Shallow supers: One or more boxes, depending on the flow.
• Crown board and roof: In most models the roof is clad with sheet metal and held down against the wind with a stone on top.

The length of the Dadant frame is close to that of the Langstroth frame; the real difference is in the depth. The brood frame is about 27–30 cm high (the Langstroth deep frame is about 23 cm). The super frame is about half the height of the brood frame. Because there are differences of a few millimetres between models sold under the same name, comparing dimensions before buying is essential.

What are the advantages of the Dadant hive?

• Uninterrupted brood nest: The brood is gathered in one box; the queen never meets a box boundary.
• Easy inspection: The whole brood nest is seen in one box; once the super is lifted, the brood box opens directly.
• Light supers: Shallow supers stay at a manageable weight even when full; super frames are well suited to extraction.
• Wintering: On deep frames the cluster eats its way upwards through the honey on the same comb; the risk of losing contact with stores when crossing between boxes is reduced.
• Large nest: Sufficient brood space can help reduce swarming tendency caused by congestion; however, it does not replace swarm control.

What are the disadvantages of the Dadant hive?

• Heavy brood frame: A deep frame full of honey and brood is noticeably heavier than a Langstroth frame; lifting frames strains the wrist.
• Two different frame sizes: Brood and super frames cannot be used interchangeably; two separate stocks are kept.
• Limited modularity: The brood nest cannot be enlarged by adding boxes; a large brood box can be too much for small colonies.
• Incompatibility: In places such as Türkiye where the Langstroth is widespread, frames and nucs cannot be exchanged with neighbouring beekeepers; nucs also have to be Dadant size.

Dadant vs Langstroth: a comparison

Neither is absolutely superior to the other. The Dadant suits a beekeeper who wants to see the brood nest at a glance and lift fewer boxes; the Langstroth suits a beekeeper who values frame interchangeability and lighter frames.

Working a Dadant hive through the seasons

1. Autumn and winter: For weak colonies the brood box is narrowed with a dummy board; unused space increases heat loss. Winter stores should be in the upper part of the brood frames.
2. Spring: As the colony develops, the dummy board is moved back and frames are added. When the brood box is full of bees, and before the flow starts, the first super is given.
3. Flow: When a super is nearly full, a new one is added. Shallow supers are easy to change and carry.
4. Harvest: Super frames are extracted; brood frames are not harvested.

Who is the Dadant hive suitable for?

It suits beekeepers who work in a stationary or nearby apiary, want to assess the brood nest in a single box and are in an area where the Dadant is common. For those with limited wrist and arm strength, the deep frame can be tiring.
