Integrated pest management means combining several methods rather than relying on a single treatment. In beekeeping it applies above all to Varroa.

The principle

The aim is not eradication but keeping the pest below the level at which it causes damage — using the least intervention that achieves it.

Eradication is not possible, and attempting it breeds resistance.

The working sequence

• Monitor: Regularly, with the same method
• Compare against a threshold: Does this actually require action?
• Prevent: Strong colonies, comb renewal, hygiene, site choice
• Use non-chemical methods first: Brood interruption, drone brood removal, trapping comb
• Treat if necessary: Approved products, rotating the active substance
• Measure again: Did it work?

Why the order matters

Every step taken before reaching for a product reduces how much product is needed. That is the whole point: fewer treatments mean slower resistance development and fewer residues in wax.

The biological lever

The mite reproduces only in sealed brood. Everything non-chemical follows from that:

• No brood, no reproduction — brood interruption works
• Drone brood stays capped longest — the mite prefers it, so removing it removes mites
• In a brood-free period all mites are on the bees — contact treatments reach nearly all of them

The breeding component

Selecting for hygienic behaviour permanently lowers the need to intervene. It is the slowest measure and the only one that compounds.

What undermines it

• Treating on a calendar date rather than a measurement
• Underdosing, which kills the susceptible mites and leaves the tough ones
• Rotating brand names rather than modes of action
• Skipping the follow-up measurement

The regional dimension

Mites and resistance move between apiaries. What your neighbouring beekeeper does affects your colonies.

Sharing information through an association is therefore part of the management, not a formality.

Records

Measurements, treatments and results. Without them there is no way to know whether the approach is working or to detect resistance before it costs a season.
