Apilarnil is a preparation made from drone larvae harvested at a particular stage and homogenised together with the contents of their cells. It is among the least known of bee products.

How it is produced

Drone larvae are taken at around the seventh day, together with the brood food in the cell, and homogenised. The result is filtered and preserved.

It is frequently produced alongside Varroa control: the drone frame cut out for mite reduction is the raw material. This makes it a by-product of a management operation rather than a separate production line.

The critical point: residues

This is more important for apilarnil than for other bee products.

Drone brood is precisely where Varroa concentrates, which means it is also where acaricide exposure concentrates. Fat-soluble substances accumulate in the fat-rich larval tissue.

Apilarnil must therefore not be produced from colonies under treatment. If a drone frame is being used both for mite control and as a raw material, the treatment calendar has to be planned around it.

The cold chain

Apilarnil is highly perishable. It must be frozen immediately after collection and kept frozen.

At room temperature it deteriorates within hours. Like royal jelly, the deterioration is not visible to the buyer.

Where the evidence stands

Research on apilarnil is markedly more limited than on other bee products. Most of it is laboratory or animal work; human studies are very few.

Claims about hormonal effects and performance are made but are not supported by adequate evidence.

The honest position: this is a product at an early stage of investigation.

Safety

  • The allergy risk should be assumed to be similar to that of other bee products
  • Residue risk is higher than for other products, for the reason above
  • Pregnancy, chronic illness and regular medication: consult a doctor

Market

The market for apilarnil is narrow and it is not widely known. Producing it means finding a buyer first; a product that requires a cold chain and cannot be sold is a cost, not a gain.

Summary

Apilarnil is an interesting by-product of drone brood removal. Its value rests on residue-free production and an unbroken cold chain — and on describing it honestly, given how little is established about it.
