Products used in bee colonies are veterinary medicines. Every rule around them follows from that.

The main rule

Only products approved for bees. Mixing your own, dosing by eye, or using products from another sector is not permitted and produces residues that cannot be removed afterwards.

The required records

Legally prescribed in many countries and requested at inspection:

• Which product
• Which date
• Which dose
• Which colonies were treated
• When the withdrawal period ends

The two unconditional boundaries

• Do not treat with supers on
• Observe withdrawal periods

Residues in honey cannot be undone, and they damage confidence in every beekeeper's product.

Why the dose matters

Underdosing is the commonest cause of resistance. It kills the susceptible mites and leaves the tough ones, which then multiply.

Leaving strips in too long does the same: towards the end the release falls to a sublethal level.

Rotation

The active substance must change, not the brand name. Two products working the same way are not an alternation.

Residues in wax

Fat-soluble substances accumulate chiefly in wax and return to the hive through foundation — affecting even beekeepers who treat carefully themselves.

A closed wax cycle using your own cappings wax limits this.

Antibiotics

With foulbrood they suppress the symptoms without removing the spores. The colony looks healthy, remains infected, and spreads the disease — often through colonies that are sold.

Their use in bees is restricted or prohibited in many countries.

The step most often skipped

Measuring after treatment. Without it you do not know whether the product worked, and resistance goes unnoticed until it costs a season.
