Honey bee populations of the Himalayan region are adapted to high altitude — an environment of cold, thin air and short seasons.

Characteristics

  • Flight at low temperatures: The most striking trait
  • Smaller colonies that consume less
  • Rapid exploitation of short flow windows
  • Excellent wintering

The altitude adaptation

At high altitude the air is thinner and the temperature lower. Both make flight harder.

Populations living there fly at temperatures at which bees from lower ground stay in. This is not a minor matter: in a region where the flow window is short, every flying day determines the crop.

The short season

At altitude the bloom is brief and arrives suddenly. The colony must be ready when it opens and then shut down quickly.

Rapid spring development and rapid cessation of brood rearing therefore belong together — two sides of the same adaptation.

The diversity of the region

The Himalayan region holds Apis cerana as well as giant and dwarf honey bee species. Different species exploit different altitudes and forage there.

That makes it one of the richest regions for honey bee diversity in the world.

Why it matters beyond the region

Flying in cold weather is a trait sought after in northern climates. It comes from populations that have lived with it for a long time.

Genetic reservoirs like this are the source of traits useful in breeding work elsewhere — but they cannot simply be transplanted: adaptation belongs to the whole set of conditions.
