Behavioural traits respond fastest to selection. For a beekeeper starting out in breeding, this is the sensible entry point.

Why behaviour responds faster

Every observed trait comes from two sources: genetics and environment.

With yield the environment weighs heavily — forage, weather, site. With behaviour the genetic contribution is larger, so progress becomes visible sooner.

The traits that count

• Temper: How the colony reacts on opening
• Steadiness on the comb: Do the bees stay put or run
• Swarming tendency: How often the colony prepares per season
• Hygienic behaviour: How quickly infected or dead brood is removed
• Grooming behaviour: Bees removing mites from one another

Measuring rather than impressions

Hygienic behaviour can be measured with a standardised test: a defined patch of sealed brood is killed and the number of cells cleared is counted after a fixed number of hours.

That is a figure you can select on. An impression that "this colony looks clean" is not.

Comparing fairly

Colonies must be under equal conditions: same apiary, same hive type, same interventions, comparable starting strength.

Do not rely on a single observation either; a colony may behave differently that day because of weather, forage or an earlier intervention.

What to do with the results

• Rear queens from the highest-scoring colonies
• Requeen the lowest-scoring
• Leave drone comb in selected colonies

The drone side is half the work and the part most often forgotten.

Trade-offs

Traits are linked. Very gentle lines are sometimes less effective at defending against robbing; some resistant populations are more defensive. Select on a combination, not on one trait.
