Wild plants are the most reliable forage in beekeeping. Unlike agricultural crops they do not burst in a single intense period; they spread across the season and fill the gaps.

Why they are valuable

  • Diversity: Different species offer different amino acid profiles; a direct contribution to colony health
  • Continuity: Species flower in succession and the gaps narrow
  • Low spraying risk: Much safer than agricultural land
  • Drought resistance: Native species are adapted to local conditions

An area rich in wild forage may give less honey than one dominated by monoculture; but the colonies develop more healthily and more evenly.

Where they are found

  • Roadsides and verges
  • Field margins and boundaries
  • Scrub and hedgerows
  • Meadows and pasture
  • Abandoned ground
  • Watersides

These linear features work like veins in the landscape. They also provide nesting sites and movement corridors for wild bees.

The timing of cutting

This is the single management decision that most affects forage.

Cutting a whole area at once reduces the forage to nothing in a day. It also destroys wild bees overwintering in hollow stems.

Staggered cutting is the answer: part of the area is left standing each time. This maintains the continuity of forage and protects wildlife.

Explaining this to landowners gives faster results than planting — often within a single season.

The problem of mown grass

Closely mown grass produces almost no flowers. Wide areas that look green can be entirely empty for bees.

Mowing less often allows clover and dandelion to flower. This is the cheapest forage improvement there is and it costs nothing.

The late summer gap

In many regions wild plants are abundant in spring and sparse in late summer. Yet winter bees are reared precisely then.

Protecting and encouraging late-flowering wild species has a direct effect on overwintering success.

The importance of native plants

The honey bee is a generalist and can use most flowers. Many wild bee species, by contrast, depend on particular plants.

Conserving native vegetation matters not only for the honey bee but for the whole pollinator community. And a diverse pollinator community is an insurance against poor weather.
