A hive scale is the most informative way of monitoring a colony without opening it. If only one measuring tool is to be bought, this should be it.

What it tells you

• Daily gain: There is a flow and the colony is collecting
• Static: The flow has ended; robbing and feeding are on the agenda
• Falling: The colony is living on its stores
• Sudden drop: A swarm may have issued
• Slow decline in winter: Normal consumption
• Accelerating decline in winter: A sign of trouble

It answers the most valuable question

A plant in flower does not necessarily yield nectar. A plant under water stress flowers but does not secrete.

The scale is the only tool that makes this distinction: if there are flowers but the weight is not rising, there is no flow.

That information cannot be obtained by eye, and it changes decisions about feeding and harvesting directly.

How many

One scale per apiary is usually enough. Colonies in the same area meet the same forage, so the scale represents the site.

Choosing a colony of average strength makes the result more generally applicable.

Types

• Mechanical, read by hand: Cheap and maintenance-free; requires regular visits
• Electronic logger: Measures continuously and stores data
• Connected: Transmits data; allows monitoring without visiting
• Single-side scale: Weighs one edge of the hive; cheap and approximate

Setting up

• The scale must stand on firm, level ground
• The whole hive must sit on it
• It must be protected from rain and sun
• Record when boxes are added or removed; otherwise the graph is misread

That last point matters: adding a super increases the weight, but that is not a flow.

A simple alternative

Without a scale, lifting the hive gently from the back gives a sense of the weight. It is not precise but it is enough for checking for starvation in winter.

The same person doing it the same way makes the assessments comparable.
