Instrumental Insemination

Instrumental insemination is the only method in which both sides of mating are fully determined.

Why it exists

A queen mates in the air with many drones from a wide area. With free mating the paternal side is therefore unknown — half the genetics is missing from the pedigree.

• Free mating: No control over the drones
• Remote mating station: Substantial control, not complete
• Insemination: Full control

What it is used for

• Breeding programmes working with defined lines
• Managing inbreeding on the basis of known descent
• Research into the heritability of traits
• Conservation of rare subspecies

What it requires

• A stereo microscope and instruments
• Anaesthesia with carbon dioxide
• Trained execution — it is a learned skill
• Mature drones of known origin
• Time per queen

Afterwards

The queen is placed in a small colony and begins laying after a few days. The brood pattern is assessed:

• Tight and even → successful
• Patchy → insufficient sperm or inbreeding
• Raised drone brood in worker cells → the queen is replaced

The limits

It is not suitable for large-scale production: too labour-intensive and too costly per queen.

Genetic diversity also remains important. Multiple mating gives a colony diversity and resilience; steering too narrowly can reduce it.

For the ordinary beekeeper

Not practical — but the results of programmes using it do reach you, through the queens and lines that come out of them.

What you can do yourself: leave drone comb in selected colonies and take part in local breeding programmes.
