Colony management is the whole of the decisions a beekeeper makes through the year: when to give space, when to split, when to feed, when to intervene.

The basic principle

A colony is an organism. It behaves as a whole rather than as individual bees, and it works to different priorities according to the season.

• Spring: Growth. The colony builds numbers rapidly
• Late spring: Reproduction. The urge to divide comes to the fore
• Summer: Storing
• Late summer: Preparing for winter. The winter bees are reared
• Winter: Survival

The beekeeper's task is not to work against this rhythm but to read it and guide it.

The timing of decisions

Most mistakes in beekeeping come not from the wrong job but from a job done late:

• A super given late triggers swarming
• A Varroa treatment applied late does not save the winter bees
• Syrup given late cannot be processed
• Queenlessness noticed late finishes the colony

Management therefore rests less on the calendar than on anticipation. The bees that will work the main flow must have been laid as eggs roughly five weeks beforehand.

What to look at in an inspection

• Is there a queen — eggs and regular brood are enough
• Is the brood pattern tight
• Are the stores sufficient
• Is the space adequate, or excessive
• Are there signs of disease or pests
• Have queen cells been built

Every inspection should be kept short; each opening costs heat and time.

Records

Holding twenty colonies and a whole season in your head is not possible. Brief notes become the most valuable tool you have a year later.
