Shallow Supers

A half-depth honey super (shallow super, shallow box, medium super) is a honey storage box that is lower than the brood box, takes shorter frames and is added on top of the brood box. It holds as many frames as a full-depth box, but each frame carries less honey; so when full it is lighter and easier to carry. In return, frames cannot be swapped with the brood box and the number of frames to process at harvest goes up.

What is a half-depth honey super?

Honey supers come in two basic heights: the full-depth box, the same depth as the brood box, and the half-depth box, which is noticeably lower. The name "half" is traditional; these boxes are not always mathematically half the height of a full box.

• In the US-derived Langstroth dimensions, a full-depth body is about 24 cm high, a medium super (in some places called a "three-quarter box") about 17 cm, and a shallow super about 14–15 cm.
• In the Dadant system the honey super (hausse) is much shallower than the brood box and is a standard part of the system.
• In Türkiye, the height of products sold as "half boxes" can vary from one manufacturer to another. When buying, always compare the frame size and body height with your existing equipment.

A half-depth box is the same width and length as the brood box and takes the same number of frames. Only the height, and therefore the frame depth, changes. The claim found in some earlier texts that "a half box holds 3–4 frames" is wrong.

Why choose a half-depth honey super?

• Lighter: A full half-depth box weighs roughly two-thirds of a full-depth box or less. This is a decisive advantage for older beekeepers, those with back problems or those working alone.
• Fills and caps faster: Because the volume is smaller, the bees fill the box more quickly; in a weak or short flow there are fewer half-finished frames.
• Separating floral honeys: In short flows it becomes easier to collect honeys from different plant sources in separate boxes.
• The queen moves up less: Shallow comb of a different size from the brood box is less attractive to the queen, even in a hive without an excluder (this is not guaranteed).
• Comb honey: Shallow frames are handier for producing cut comb or comb honey in the frame.

What are the drawbacks of a half-depth honey super?

• Frame incompatibility: A shallow frame cannot be given to the brood box, and a brood frame will not fit in a shallow box. This reduces flexibility when making splits or supporting a weak colony with a honey frame.
• More parts: The same amount of honey needs more boxes, more frames and more foundation. Uncapping and extracting take longer because there are more frames.
• A second stock: It means two different frame sizes, two different foundation sizes and separate storage.
• Extractor: Make sure the baskets of your extractor hold shallow frames well.

Full-depth or half-depth super? A comparison

Many beekeepers use both: a full-depth brood box and first super, with half-depth boxes after that. What matters is that each hive type within an operation sticks to one system.

When and how do you add a half-depth honey super?

1. Timing: Add it when the brood box is full of bees (about 7–8 frames covered in a 10-frame hive), fresh white wax appears on the top bars and the local nectar flow has begun. Boxes added outside the flow, or while only pollen is coming in, will not fill.
2. First box: If possible, give it with drawn comb; if foundation is used, place one or two drawn combs in the middle.
3. Follow-up: Because a half-depth box fills fast, inspect often; add a new one when the box is about two-thirds to three-quarters full.
4. Excluder: If a queen excluder is used, it goes between the brood box and the first half-depth super; the requirement for a strong colony and a flow applies here too.

Harvesting from a half-depth honey super

• The proportion of capped cells is the main harvest criterion: most of the frames should be capped; the general moisture limit for honey is 20%.
• Because they are light, boxes can be taken off one by one at the hive; but boxes that have been removed should be covered at once to prevent robbing.
• Short frames pass through your hands faster during uncapping, but there are more of them; make sure the uncapping stand holds a shallow frame firmly.
• Combs returning from the extractor are stored in a dry, cool place, protected against wax moth.

Common mistakes

• Putting a shallow frame in the brood box: the bees build wild comb with drone cells underneath it.
• Using half-depth boxes of different sizes on the same hive.
• Giving the box to a weak colony when there is no flow.
• Not expanding a fast-filling box in time; the bees fill the brood box with honey and prepare to swarm.
• Thinking "a half-depth box makes more honey": the amount of honey is set by colony strength and the flow; the advantage of the half-depth box is labour and flexibility.
