Propolis Packaging

💬 WhatsApp

Propolis packaging equipment covers the scales, filling, capping, sealing and labelling tools used to put raw propolis and propolis extracts into consumer packaging hygienically, in the correct quantity and without leaks. On a small scale, a precision scale, hand-filling devices and a heat sealer for bags are enough; larger businesses use metered filling and automatic capping machines. Packaging must comply with the labelling and hygiene rules of food legislation.

Which propolis products are packaged?

  • Raw propolis: In pieces, flakes or ground; in a glass jar, a food-grade plastic container or a light-proof bag.
  • Propolis extract (drops): An alcohol-, water- or glycerine-based liquid; usually in a dark glass dropper bottle.
  • Sprays and other forms: Spray bottles, capsules or powder; these require separate production and authorisation processes.

Raw propolis and extracted propolis are different products; in Türkiye, the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Bee Products defines them separately. For every product offered for sale, the business must have the appropriate registration or approval.

How do you choose packaging material?

  • Protection from light: Propolis and its extracts are light-sensitive; dark (amber) glass, an opaque container or a foil-lined bag is preferred.
  • Alcohol resistance: For alcoholic extracts, the bottle, inner stopper, dropper bulb and spray head must be compatible with alcohol; otherwise leaks, odours and material breakdown result.
  • Food safety: All packaging in contact with the product must be suitable for food contact.
  • Tight seal and tamper evidence: A tamper-evident ring, band or seal increases consumer confidence.
  • Right size: Small packs shorten the time the product is exposed to air and light after opening.

How is propolis packaged? Step by step

  1. Prepare the area: The packing area should be clean, cool and dust-free; surfaces and tools are cleaned and dried.
  2. Prepare the product: Raw propolis must be cleaned and cold; extract must be filtered and clear. The details of each batch are checked.
  3. Check the packaging: Bottles and jars must be clean, dry and free of cracks; caps and droppers must be complete.
  4. Weigh and fill: Raw propolis is weighed on the scale; liquid products are filled with a metering device. Any spillage is wiped off.
  5. Close: Caps are tightened with a constant force; bags are closed with a heat seal.
  6. Label and code: The label is applied straight and legibly; batch number and date are printed.
  7. Records and samples: A packing record is kept; a sample from each batch is set aside and retained.
When filling alcoholic extracts, alcohol vapour builds up and is flammable. There must be no open flames or devices that could spark in the filling area, and the room must be well ventilated.

What should a propolis label include?

Labelling rules are set by food labelling legislation (in Türkiye, the Turkish Food Codex); check the current rules with the official veterinary service / local agriculture authority or in the legal text. In general, the following information is expected:

  • the name of the product (raw propolis or propolis extract) and the list of ingredients, including the solvent used in extracts,
  • net quantity, batch number and date information,
  • name and address of the producer or packer, business registration or approval number,
  • storage conditions (cool, dark place) and directions for use,
  • a warning for people allergic to bee products; the alcohol content in alcoholic products.

No claims of preventing or treating disease may appear on the label or in advertising. Phrases such as "boosts immunity" or "cures infection" are both misleading and against the law.

What should you look for when choosing packaging equipment?

  • Scale: For a few kilograms a year, hand filling and simple sealing are enough; investing in machinery only makes sense for regular, high-volume production.
  • Ease of cleaning: Propolis residue does not wash off with water; equipment with removable parts that can be cleaned with alcohol is preferable.
  • Material: Parts in contact with the product should be stainless steel, glass or alcohol-resistant food-grade plastic.
  • Filling accuracy: In small bottles, even a deviation of a few millilitres matters; adjustable dosing is needed.

Common mistakes

  • Selling in clear bottles on a sunny shelf.
  • Packaging an alcoholic extract with a dropper or spray head that is not alcohol-resistant.
  • Omitting the batch number and date: a faulty product cannot be recalled.
  • Using treatment and health claims on the label.
  • Packing uncleaned or scraped propolis as though it were clean product.

Frequently asked questions

What bottle are propolis drops sold in?

Usually a dark (amber) glass dropper bottle. The dropper and cap must be alcohol-resistant.

How is raw propolis packaged?

Cleaned, cold propolis is weighed into a dark glass jar or a light-proof bag, closed tightly and labelled.

Does a small producer need a packaging machine?

No. A precision scale, a hand-filling device, a capper and a heat sealer are enough on a small scale.

Can health benefits be stated on a propolis label?

No. Claims of preventing or treating disease may not appear on a food label.
