Preventing swarming does not mean breaking the colony's urge but redirecting it. A colony that has decided to divide will not be stopped by treating symptoms.

The method that does not work

Breaking queen cells is not a solution in itself. If the colony has decided, it makes new ones.

Worse: if one is overlooked, the swarm leaves anyway. And every cell-breaking session costs time without removing the cause.

Removing the causes

Space

Lack of space is the strongest trigger. Add the super before the brood chamber fills, not after — a common criterion is to give new space when about three-quarters is full.

Congestion

At excessive density the queen's pheromone fails to reach all the bees and the colony behaves as though it were going queenless.

Removing sealed brood lowers the pressure and strengthens another colony at the same time.

Queen age

An older queen produces less pheromone. A young queen shows markedly less swarming tendency, which makes regular requeening one of the most effective measures available.

Ventilation

A hot, stuffy hive encourages swarming. An open mesh floor and adequate airflow help.

The inspection interval

The prime swarm usually leaves around the sealing of the first queen cell, and egg to sealed cell takes about eight days.

The inspection interval must therefore be shorter than eight days. Anyone checking every ten days misses the swarm — however well everything else was done.

Redirecting rather than blocking

Once preparation has begun, dividing the colony yourself is the most reliable route: an artificial swarm, a nuc, or a split with a cell.

The urge to divide is satisfied and no swarm leaves. In addition a brood-free period arises — a favourable window for Varroa treatment.

The breeding angle

Swarming tendency is heritable. Rearing from colonies that swarm little and requeening those that swarm often makes a noticeable difference within a few years.
