Climate change affects beekeeping less through temperature than through timing. The calendar the colony and the plants run on is drifting apart.

The core problem: phenological mismatch

Colony development runs on a combination of day length and temperature. Plants respond mainly to temperature.

When the two shift at different rates the result is a mismatch:

  • The flow opens before the colony is ready, and closes before it has built up
  • Or the colony builds up and finds no forage waiting

This is why fixed calendars are becoming steadily less reliable.

Warm autumns and Varroa

This is the most concrete effect for the beekeeper.

A warm autumn extends brood rearing. The consequences:

  • The broodless period narrows or disappears
  • Treatments that work only on broodless colonies lose their window
  • The mite continues to reproduce for longer
  • Winter stores are consumed while brood is still being reared

A beekeeper who applies oxalic acid on a fixed date may now be applying it to a colony still rearing brood — and getting little effect.

Drought and nectar

A plant under water stress flowers but secretes little or no nectar. Drought therefore reduces yield without changing the appearance of the landscape.

Flowering may look normal while the hive scale shows nothing. This is precisely why a scale has become more useful than it once was.

Extreme weather

  • Late frosts destroy flowering that has come early
  • Heavy rain during a flow prevents flying
  • Heat waves force the colony to spend its effort on cooling
  • Storms and floods cause direct losses

Variability matters as much as the average shift; an unpredictable season is harder to manage than a warmer one.

Pests moving

Warming widens the range of invasive species. Pests that could not previously overwinter in a region now can.

The spread of invasive hornets and the westward movement of Tropilaelaps are current examples.

How to adapt

  • Follow triggers, not dates. The state of the forage and the brood is more reliable than a calendar
  • Keep your own records. Written year by year, they show how flowering is shifting
  • Use a scale. It distinguishes flowering from an actual flow
  • Confirm the broodless period by measurement rather than assuming it
  • Work with locally adapted lines
  • Provide water; demand rises in heat
  • Spread the risk across more than one site

The beekeeper as observer

Records kept over years are among the few sources showing how flowering dates are moving. Shared through associations they build a regional body of evidence.
