Migratory beekeeping means moving colonies to successive forages as they open. It raises yield but adds cost, labour and risk.

The logic

Flowering shifts with altitude, latitude and climate. The same plant can flower weeks apart on a valley floor and on a hillside.

Moving colonies through these differences extends the forage period well beyond what a fixed apiary can reach.

What it gains

• A longer forage season
• Single-flower honey: A particular flowering can be worked and harvested separately
• Pollination income
• Escaping a poor season: A failed flow in one region can be replaced elsewhere

The costs

• Transport: Fuel, vehicle, labour
• Stress on the colonies: Every move disturbs them
• Equipment: Hives must be transportable and secured
• Time: Loading and unloading are heavy work
• Site arrangements: Permission and payment

The least discussed risk

Migratory beekeeping brings together agents from different regions.

• Colonies from separate areas meet at the same site
• Mites and diseases pass between them by robbing and drifting
• A pest can be carried into a region where it did not exist
• Local resistance patterns are mixed

This is why health checks before moving and notification requirements exist. In many countries movement is subject to registration.

Planning

• Know the forage calendar. Which flowering opens where and when
• Arrange sites in advance; do not go without permission
• Learn the spraying calendar for agricultural areas
• Check access; a track that fails in rain traps a loaded vehicle
• Plan the return as well as the outward move

Colony condition

Only strong colonies should be moved. A weak colony is set back further by the stress of transport.

Varroa levels should be measured before a move; carrying a heavily infested colony to a new site spreads the problem.

Records

Every movement should be recorded: date, origin, destination, number of colonies. If a disease problem arises this record is what allows the source to be traced.
