Large mammals cause damage rarely but severely. Where they occur, prevention is the only workable approach.

The damage

• Hives knocked over and broken open
• Frames dragged out and destroyed
• Brood and stores eaten
• Colonies lost outright
• Repeat visits once a site has been found

That last point matters most: a large animal that has found an apiary returns.

The answer: electric fencing

Where large mammals are present this is the standard solution and the only one that reliably works.

• The fence must be in place before the first visit, not after
• Multiple strands at different heights
• Vegetation beneath it kept cut; contact drains the charge
• The charge checked regularly — an unpowered fence teaches the animal there is nothing to fear

A fence installed after the first raid works less well: the animal already knows what is inside.

Site choice

• Avoid known animal routes and watering points
• Avoid woodland edges where cover reaches the hives
• Prefer open, visible ground
• Ask local beekeepers where problems occur

Practical measures

• Secure hives with straps and weights
• Raise them on stands
• Leave no spilt honey, no comb and no extraction waste at the site
• Group hives rather than scattering them

Legal position

Many large mammals are protected. Killing them, trapping them or poisoning them is prohibited in most countries, and damage compensation schemes usually require that preventive measures were in place.

Recording the damage — photographs, date, location — is a condition for any claim.

A balanced view

These losses are dramatic but uncommon. Varroa, nutrition and wintering account for far more colony deaths than any large animal.

The fence is worth building where the risk is real; elsewhere the effort belongs with the mite.
