The commonest commercial mistake in beekeeping is setting a price without knowing the cost. The usual result is selling at a loss — a loss that takes years to notice.

Why cost stays hidden

Costs are spread across the year; the income arrives in a few weeks. That makes the real cost invisible.

Several items are never counted at all: your own labour, travel, colony losses, equipment wear.

Cost items

Direct

• Sugar and feed
• Medicines and acaricides
• Foundation
• Jars, lids, labels
• Queens

Indirect

• Depreciation of hives and frames
• Extraction equipment
• Protective clothing
• Fuel and travel
• Apiary rent or site payment
• Registration, insurance, association fees

Not counted but real

• Your own labour. Without putting a value on the hour you cannot calculate profit
• Colony losses. Every colony lost over winter is a cost
• Replacement. Raising nucs consumes resources too

Unit cost

Dividing total cost by quantity produced is the starting point. More useful is the cost per colony.

That figure shows how many colonies make sense and which product actually pays.

Approaches to pricing

• Cost plus: Margin added to unit cost. Simple but ignores the market
• Market price: Based on competitors. May not cover cost
• Value based: Based on what makes the product different — separate harvesting, single flower, traceability, comb honey

For a small producer the third is usually soundest: you cannot compete on volume, but you can on distinction.

Added value

The same honey sold in different forms carries markedly different prices:

• Bulk — the lowest
• Jarred
• Separately harvested single flower
• Comb honey
• Direct to the consumer

The last usually makes the largest difference and requires no equipment investment.

Records

A simple ledger suffices: expenditure, quantity produced, sales and time spent. In the second year that ledger tells you the price.
