The Syrian bee is a subspecies of the eastern Mediterranean, strongly adapted to heat and drought.

Characteristics

Weaknesses from a management view

• Defensiveness makes routine inspection demanding

Why the traits make sense

Each of these characteristics is a response to an environment where forage can disappear without warning. A small colony survives a dearth that would starve a large one; frequent swarming spreads the risk across locations.

What looks like a management problem elsewhere is an adaptation in its own region.

Use in beekeeping

It is little used outside its native range, for the usual reasons: it is selected for a local climate, its temper is demanding, and importation is regulated in most countries.

Conservation value

Drought and heat tolerance are traits that may become more relevant as climates shift. Local subspecies hold that adaptation, and uncontrolled crossing dilutes it.

Once an adaptation has gone from a population, it does not return.
