The Africanized honey bee is a hybrid population that arose from the crossing of an African subspecies with European subspecies in the Americas. It spread widely from its point of introduction.

Characteristics

• Defensiveness: Markedly higher than European subspecies; responds faster, in greater numbers, and pursues further
• Rapid reproduction: Builds up quickly and swarms frequently
• Absconding: Readily abandons the hive when disturbed or when forage fails
• Smaller colonies with smaller stores
• Resource-efficient: Adjusts brood rearing rapidly to conditions

Why it spread so successfully

The traits that make it difficult to manage are the same ones that made it competitive: rapid reproduction, frequent swarming, tolerance of forage interruptions and strong defence.

In a tropical and subtropical environment those characteristics outperform European genetics.

The management problem

• Routine inspection requires more protection and more care
• Colonies cannot be kept near people or livestock without precautions
• Frequent swarming demands strict inspection intervals
• Absconding makes colonies unreliable

The public safety dimension

This is what distinguishes it from other management challenges. Colonies near dwellings, paths or livestock present a real hazard, and stinging incidents involving people and animals have been documented.

Where this population is present, site selection is a safety question, not a convenience one.

The Varroa aspect

Better tolerance of Varroa is described for these populations, attributed to shorter development time, grooming and hygienic behaviour.

This is one of the reasons the genetics attract interest in breeding work despite the management difficulties.

Requeening as management

Where beekeepers work in areas with this population, the standard approach is regular requeening with selected, gentler stock — accepting that free mating will gradually reintroduce local genetics.
